How You Can Arrange the Garden for Fall

Before we talk about gardening, please visit parenting styles and positive parenting.

Our garden already reflects the appearance of autumn. Not that autumn is lacking charm, but it does mean that some wonderful summertime and springtime growers have died down. Not all is lost, though, as there are lovely plants we are able to grow that will please us right up to the early part of winter.

What can we do once the flowers start to put on a rusty aspect and trees start to lose their leaves? Fall has been heralded, and the cold season that follows requires gardens to be prepared. The plants and the trees from your garden need help to survive until the spring. Here are some practical tips that would help you to prepare the garden for the autumn.

For those who have a large garden with many trees, it is important to be certain they are cut and ready for the cold season. This calls for getting rid of dead branches, and a pair of garden shears is often all that’s required. These have the potential of suffocating the healthy branches by hindering sunlight from getting through. While it is believed that you can make natural fertilizer using dead leaves, this is not entirely true. Trouble is that the soil quality could be damaged by leaf-borne diseases.

A high-potassium fertilizer is definitely something you have to feed the soil with. The defensive coating will ready the plants for the cold winter. Do not forget that some spring flowers require planting right now. Old fertilizer layers should be removed and replaced with new ones. If you ever insist on using dead leaves to coat the soil, make sure that you choose healthy ones and spread them out in a consistent layer.

The best time for planting evergreens is at the beginning of October. Get the soil ready by watering it a day or so before you decide to plant. After you have planted any bulbs you have to water them, but you should never overdo it. Remember to always use the weather conditions, if it’s going to pour with rain in a few hours, don’t waste your time watering the plants as this could be dangerous to your plants.

Another thing you must do in autumn is till the ground. The proper digging level is normally 15-20 centimeters. When you take on this job, you must take out any vegetation including fruits and leaves from the soil. Healthy leaves and fruit are great for enriching the soil, so only burn them if they are not healthy.

Your lawn also demands work. If you want to prepare it for winter, you will need to mow the lawn as short as you can. Don’t neglect to feed it with special lawn fertilizers to ensure it keeps healthy.

It will probably be easier to complete all these jobs and move plants around if you leave garden implements out during October, which is the best month for these activities. All those impressive decoratives that enjoy the hot seasons should be protected against freezing by means of a foil shield. A couple of sheets of foil usually are enough, depending on the dimensions of the plant. It’s essential to also paint the lower base of the plant, especially for the younger ones as this will keep the harsh reflective light coming from the snow from damaging it.
